How do you feel about 14 miles on the 18th? I'm thinking Laurel Road and Legacy trail, south to Circus Bridge, across to Venetian waterway Park, south to Caspersen Beach and back. If you want to run Ringling Bridge in Sarasota, we can do that.

Got to be better than a hotel treadmill!

The vacation did me good as I had a decent run and just went out to have fun. Depsite the non favorable conditions I had about 4 MP miles including a 7:12 into the wind without it seeming like I was pushing it. That made me smile.

It's certainly springtime in Ohio. Yes every state has the joke about if you don't like the weather wait 15 minutes it'll change. However, running in 73º to running in 39º with a cold wind in just 2 days just seems.... off....

My legs were tired and not ready for any real speed work so I went with what the would give me. 3 Mile WU and then 6 miles between HMP & MP. After that some slow miles and then finished with and HMP mile. Got in, had some pork and washed it down with a banana/date/berry/chia smoothie. Off to church for a mortgage burning celebration. Crisp 30º this morning, but there was little to no wind for a change and that was welcome. I was rushing this morning since were flying down to see dad today. No breakfast, no fuel, no water, but it was only 12 so shouldn't be a big deal 6x1 mile... 5x1 mile repeats. 2 Mile WU and the hot the repeats. The 1st 2 @ 6:50's then 7's , but once I hit the 4th repeat it was like someone put lead in my legs. the 5th repeat was just embarrassingly slow so I left it at that and did not pursue the 6th repeat just to dog it. I am not sure if I just did not have it or lack of any fuel or just the busy week I had. Oh well no worries, got my run in before it gets too crazy and will do some miles in FL.

AM- 64º --> 72º I didn't feel  much like running today, and that's why I did it. I got up well enough early this morning. Got my fuel belt ready walked out the door and a wasp stung me on the hand at 6 this morning. Thanks. Not sure what his problem was. Hit the bike bath, cloudy and rainy for the first 5 miles - this despite a 0% chance of rain.

12 Mile WU and then 5 miles at MP or better (tougher than I expected after 12 WU). Those five were clear skies and sun beating down on me naturally. Sounds dramatic, but hey, you never know when someone might make a movie out of this training run. At mile 14 I found a pocket knife -tossed it my belt for my kid. She likes knives. at mile 16 I noticed some vultures eating some dead carcass. A bit gross but I ran on. It made me wonder if I was next. Were they circling? That made me think of Flatlander. What ever happened to that guy? He was so consistent at running then like so many on the blog just stopped posting last year. Hope hes well. Wrapped up at 17 as I had to get to work.

I wanted to do 20 early Saturday, but woke up to flash floods and lightening storms from 4am-10am. No run. wedding at 11:30 then to Aly's last performance. Great day, just no run. Home about 9 pm so I moved my long run to Sunday between church services with no time to spare. Side effect was I had to do some heat training. Afternoon run, 81º and moderate humidity. Steady wind for some resistance too. All seemed to start fine and I did not push anything early. No need to crash and burn on a hot and sunny day. Ran 10 out and threw in a few half marathon pace miles. I did not bring fuel, but had plenty of water, chia fresca and emergen-c. Around mile 16 the heat just hit me all at once. Needed to stop multiple times for drinks and slowed down the pace down to high 9's. Miserable last 2 miles as I stopped at 19. Looks like I need more heat training. Glad to get the miles in, but I felt sick for about an hour and a half after.

All the rain this week left many of the bike path sections flooded so it was creative running for many streches today and quite a few loops to get the long run in. A few deer joined me which was better than the skunk Friday. 5 Mile WU and then 10 Mile at SBQMP (7:37-7:23 for all ten) and then 5 Mile cool down.

Beautiful running weather!!! Do you do the striders at the end of the run or work them into the run and why 11? That's an odd number.

From Dan on Wed, May 10, 2017 at 19:08:37 from 71.72.159.140

Rhett- I usually start them when I feel warmed up. So 3 to 4 miles into the run I will do the striders around 5k pace. Why 11? I think because I am odd. I used to do 8. Then 9. Then 10. You get the idea :)

My first 50K - Kinda decided two weeks ago I would try it. My experience was overall good. My time and place are a bit deceiving, but more on that later.

We dodged a bullet as it has been hot and humid all week. We had some storms that drastically cooled it off and ended up 10 degrees lower than forecast. Good news. The flip side was the rain flooded the trails in at least 6 spots. And I mean up to my shorts deep in spots. Add in how hilly this thing was and then the uphill became so muddy. I fell twice and hit pretty hard. Luckily not where rocks were.

Unexpected- I did not expect there to be hills I had to walk. Not in my nature. Also limestone so slick that even a few downhill spots had to be walked. Crazy trails. I also did not expect when I broke away from the middle back and wanted to catch the lead pack that I would miss markers and get lost. This cost me almost 3 miles exactly. If I take out that I end up under 6 hours and finish about 15th-19th. Still my 29th I will be satisfied with since its my first 50k and there were about 120 runners. I will see if I can share some pics soon.

Finally back home after a incredible history trip. I lead my youth group every year on a week+ long trip on the Christian foundations of our country. This year was Virgina with stops at Mount Vernon, Monticello, St Johns Church, Yorktown and Williamsburg. Weather was brtually hot with 90's all week and 99 Thursday and 100 Friday. I ran very little, but got out when I could.

Home and back to work. AM and refreshing 66º  8+miles, time to get consistent.

AM- 70º/99% and just kinda gross. It is mornings like these that I am not sure how anyone could believe scientist who preach global warming, global cooling, or the Earth will be like ___ in 100 years. Hear me out... I went to bed last night around 10:30 and the forecast was 64 with rain from 6am-11am, possible thunderstorm. OK not to bad for an August long run. I wake up around 5:30. It is already 68 and climbing. Hmmm. I noticed it started to rain while I was making my coffee and it stopped 2 minutes later. I get ready to run and check the weather. 70, and rain is all cancelled. The silver lining is it would overcast until about 2pm and then mostly cloudy. No visor. 7 miles into my run and it is ALL SUNSHINE. It got partly cloudy around mile 16 but still... you can't get the weather right an hour ahead of time and you want to tell me the weather on the Earth will be 50 years from now? Hogwash.

Anyway, took it nice and easy. Was going for something between 18-20 and I just did not want to sweat more for 20.

Got some encouragement by some walkers and that was nice. Ran from Rip Rap to Triangle to Island to Riverscape in down town Dayton along the river. Under the one bike bath bridge was a guy with a guitar, amp and a groupie. The acoustics were cool, but I would have like something a bit more peppy. 20 miles, 13 at MP. Felt good at the end.

6x1 5x1 Mile repeats. Very tired/sore legs this morning, maybe I went to fast on the trails last night or its just the trials of miles.... miles of trials... I dunno. First 3 miles on rolling hills were hitting pace (6:55, 6:54, 6:56) despite not being flat so that was a mental boost. Mile 4 was 85% uphill and gut check, it was all I could do to hold a MP mile. Mile 5 was trashed legs after that hill. I got under MP and just over 1/2 MP but thats it so I scrapped repeat 6. Overall satisfied with the run and back to work.

Ran from Fishburg over the dam in Taylorsville, to tadmor, to underpass to Kyle park. 3 Mile warmup then 16 MP Miles. As a reference for me BQ pace is 7:49. To actually get in pace is around 7:40. So my 16 miles were at 7:35 AP. Then 1 mile cool down. The encouraging part is I still had gas in the tank at the end of 20. I am tired sure, but knowing I had more in me was a mental boost. Cold and rainy run. 8 Miles w/11x 150m striders. My legs felt good and the vast majoity of the strides were much faster than 5k pace. A few down in the 4's if you were to look at pace. I don't expect much benefit from this run other than to keep sharp. Oh and more deer out!

10 days to the race. 1st long range forecast would be 42º at race start. Oh how I would love that.

Race: Anthem Richmond Marathon (26.2 Miles) 03:22:06, Place overall: 330, Place in age division: 33
Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

Race day came. I slept well until about 2:38 when I woke up and then struggled to get back to bed. Oh well. Got my oatmeal and two cups of coffee. Which after going 14 days with no caffeine that was heavenly. 27º at race start, which was cold. Mild wind which was nice until the bridge (more on that later). I got down to the starting area without issue and chatted with a few people as they shivered. I talked to #6. He was Ethiopian and very smooth even with how he walked. I though, this guy might be the winner. (he finished 2nd)

Race started and the first mile is flat, but the next 5 are slightly uphill. I planned on running easy at first and conserving energy even if that meant falling a bit behind. That went as scripted. 7:40, 7:40, 7:43, 7:39, 7:30, 7:51. The next mile was all downhill and I just wanted to put forth the same effort, but make up the time. 6:59 Boom. Right on track. The next 10 miles are a series of rolling hills. Nothing killer, but enough to make you work. I wanted to save energy for mile 16, the bridge which is the biggest hill I was told. Again, just went steady just holding back a hair 7:39, 737, 744, 7:47, 7:46, 7:36, 7:43, 7:29, That was some of the prettiest parts of the marathon. James river was pretty sweet and very nice to run by, although it made it colder. Then the Bridge at 16. It wasn't that big of a hill honestly. It just seemed to last for over a mile. That combined with a headwind that was not felt at all during the twisty parts by the river made it tough. The wheels did not come off, but I struggled on the bridge. 8:12 Ugly. The next two miles we slightly up hill and I could not get myself as far down as I hoped. 7:55, 7:49. I studied the elevation chart well, but somehow I was not getting the downhills I expected for the next several miles to match the rolling uphills. They were mild, but I felt them. 7:49, 7:37, 7:59, 7:44, 7:55, 7:49, 7:52, 7:45. The last mile I was told was all downhill. Not quite, but the last .6 were a steep downhill. I was a little annoyed I couldn't push it harder. 7:37. 1:24 for the .22 (6:57) rounded out the run. 3:22:06. I am satisfied with the results. Not the killer race I wanted, but I am still happy I did not give up or into the cold/fading legs. So good enough for now, I can build off the experience. :)

I'm curious about the 14 days with no caffeine, then coffee on race day thing. I'm glad that worked for you. But I've always stood by the nothing different on race day philosophy.

From Dan on Thu, Nov 16, 2017 at 10:17:30 from 99.101.3.203

Thanks guys. Like I said, good but not great. I am enjoying my week off running. I often start running too soon after a race and promised myself a SOLID week off.

Tom- I agree on nothing new - with the exception of caffeine. I KNOW caffeine has helped me in the past, but I also know I have it often so it is limited. I wanted to purge my body of it before racing and have it before and during the run. Next time I may actually purge an entire month. It is probably placebo effect, but who knows. It is like everyone saying the Nike Vapor fly 4% is helping them set BIG PR's. I find it hard to believe unless you normally race in dress shoes or heels.
