AM- 73/80% - we have a 3 day heat wave coming up here. Actually good timing. We are headed to Fla to Universal Orlando and it should be hot down there too. Hoping to have some heat so when I come back it will be nice and cool for the marathon.... I hope... 7 Easy, legs struggled this morning. Parts of the sidewalks around here have new concrete. Is it me or did it feel 'lighter' on these new patches. Odd.

PM- 93/49%- Hot, but not that bad really. Legs felt much better. I let them run whatever they felt like. 8:32 avg. 7 Easy.

I had real trouble sleeping so I had to run later. It was hot, 93. We were under a heat advisory, will be 100 the next few days. 5 Easy miles, needing the upcoming taper.

I was not sure how I wanted to approach today. 2 weeks till marathon so I wanted a strong workout- yet I did not want to kill myself and I have been promising my legs some rest. So early on in the week I figured I'd run all 16 at MP, but  since we have 4+ days of a heat wave of 100 or near 100 temps (that I am sure will pass soon) and I am tired I thought a solid 10 mile tempo at sub MP would be good.

73/100% (I thought those days were gone)... I should have gotten up 2 hours earlier, sun was warm,oh well. 16 Miles, 10 tempo were 7:22 (hills, inclines), 7:14, 7:19, 7:23, 7:26, 7:21, 7:24, 7:27 (rolling hills), 7:26, 7:35 (steep hills). Avg 7:23. Ok I suppose.

Getting packed up and ready to travel!

Vacation running... have to love it. I am in Florida at my dads now. This week was running less miles than planned, but after running each morning we walked around Universal Orlando (Studios and Islands of Adventure) all day so I am thinking that has to count and some sort of relaxed cross training after all those miles (I actually was going to be a geek for awhile and wear my Garmin to see how many miles the park is, but disapproving looks from the teenager made me stop - but she loved when I wore my orange shoes in the park).

As far as a vacation site, the theme parks were amazing. My only real complaint is how much you pay up front and yet then continue to nickel and dime you. I mean pay for parking at the hotel after the rooms were how much!!??! They had a great 'gym'... oh wait, that cost more too.... luckily I planned on running outside so it would (and was) hot. Anyway, let me get off the money side of vaca, because the parks were simply the best I've been too. I am a thrill ride junky anyway so coasters were a blast, but the themes and effort they put into these areas I would recommend to anyone - so so fun.  We are HP fans so the Hogwarts castle, themes, pumpkin juice and butter beer were nice and yummy. I could go on for hours on different aspects of details or shows, again it was amazing,

Now at dads, he lives on the gulf side and he spent an hour explaining to me why it is so humid in Florida now. That's what dads do. Over all my legs are still somewhat sore,  and even though the taper has stated and I am down miles, I think the rest will serve me well. 80/90% today. It will be hot and humid for the near future so when I get back it should feel like great running weather.

I have to be careful for what I ask for! I wanted to finish my training/taper while on vaca and wanted some brutal weather to run in. Well I got it. 81/93%- hot. Sun rose and I wanted to remind my legs of what we will be doing so I ran 4 miles at the hottest part sub MGP (7:09ish/mile). Good run, but I was SOAKED- pool time, college football and beach on the menu... don't you just love vaca? I plan on some beach miles for fun, not really for training :)

6 Miles on the beach today. Wore my old shoes that need retired since I did not think it would be a good idea to just start barefoot running right now, even if it was the beach. It was good and well hard. Reminded me of my snow runs, hard (and well hot instead of cold)- yet amazing to enjoy God's creation this way. The workout was good with the resistance and running in the ocean afterwards was very enjoyable.

Vacation taper- part 10. Makes it sound exciting. I guess I have not even touched on the wild life we have encountered. One thing I love about dad's is everything that is around. Sure I have seen plenty of bunnies and squirrels like normal, but on various runs and other times I have the fun of spotting 2 turtles (1 in water and 1 out), 5 Dolphins, 2 Sea Slugs, a few sand dollars, Ghost Crab, Stone Crab, A dying Jellyfish, A black racer snake, a baby pygmy rattlesnake, a falcon (or maybe osprey) among several other bird, Several clams and looking to spot the manatees tomorrow. (We have seen them and manta rays in past years here).

Enjoying ourselves, Hot/humid run this morning, last few miles sub MGP. Looking forward to running in cooler weather soon, still predicting 50 degree at race start.

Last hot run- 4 miles. Driving back to Ohio first thing tomorrow so it will be more than a full day in the car- the price of vacation. Been a great vacation for relaxing and seeing everything- like a few more dolphins today :)

Home safe. 2 Miles to stretch the legs out and admittedly they were needed. 16 hours driving/riding in the car makes ones legs stiff. I am thankful we got in early enough to sleep well yesterday and had a day to loose. Picked up the packet and bib today, swag bag was nice :) 3199, my new lucky number. Watching motivating movies right now... feel... anxious

Slept pretty well last night, might have been a tad over hydrated as I went to the bathroom too much. It's funny too (about sleeping, not the potty) because I get myself all jazzed up with motivational movies and clips and then just crash.

Woke up before 5, got my oatmeal on and stayed pretty relaxed throughout the morning as I headed over to the base. It was a good mile walk to the starting area, which was probably good as it was cool this morning (Happy about that!!)

Race start was nice, 48 degrees, and the Air Force sure knows how to start a race. We have the anthem being sung, flags everywhere, officers and military soldiers wishing you luck and the best was the B-1 doing the fly by at the start of the race!! Pretty darn sweet.

So the race begins and I am doing a pretty good job of staying relaxed wanted to keep my excitement and energy hopefully for later. I checked the elevation map and I knew the first 2 miles were uphill so it is always a challenge figuring out what is 'too fast' and what is 'too slow' with hills right off the bat.

Miles 1 & 2 - 7:36, 7:25 Wore my dollar Wal-Mart gloves for these till I warmed up. Tossed them off at mile 3. Thanks Kelli!

Mile 3 - 7:01   I knew I would get some time back since there was a modest down here hill, but knew there would be a slight uphill after that. I felt decent, but yet was still unsure if I wanted to go for broke at attempt Sub 3:10 or run 3:15 like I was planning. I figured I would try a negative split today if I felt well.

Miles 4-6 - 7:35, 7:24, 7:16  After the small hill, it was a small gradual downhill then was flat for many miles after that. Here was pretty good as I was chatting with a few people, it was one girls birthday and she was wearing a birthday crown. I thought it was neat and people would cheer her on, but I'd hate something like that on my head during a marathon!

Miles 7 & 8 - 7:25, 7:30  We entered the city of Fairborn which is nice, they are very supportive. They had a line a cheerleaders who were like ages 8-10 with a young band behind them. They were adorable, and had their hands out for 'low fives' I made the time to go over and slap each one of them and though out the town give high fives to any of the kids who were looking for it. Sure it cost a few second, but more than worth it.

Miles 10-12 - 7:28, 7:23, 7:29  I saw a friend of mine near the end of the city, and she was cheering me and another mutual friend on. I stopped for a second to say hello, get a hug and say thanks :) After that we got back to the base and were heading towards the airstrips.

Miles 13-14 - 7:26, 7:42  This is where I wanted to decide if I really wanted to push a negative split or not. I seemed to feel fine, maybe a little sore in the back, but overall good, the down side was I really needed a bathroom stop! I took it at mile 14 as you might see. I did talk to another guy that ran the Kentucky Derby Marathon, he said there was a tough part (don't they all have those?) but was a good one.

Miles 15-18 - 7:26, 7:10, 7:11, 7:23  I figured I push just a bit, and I was ok, but that was the problem. I felt just ok, not comfortable at this point. I thought if I kept pushing lower 7's I would crash so I backed off that pace - that and I knew some blisters had formed and popped - I will post the bloody images later! Bummer, but not really disappointed - just testing the legs.

Miles 19-21 - 7:24, 7:16, 7:31  Starting to feel just a little tired. Somewhere around here 2 fighter jets screamed by. That was very very cool. We had planes all day from big jumbo transports, to old WWI style planes, but the fighters were the best (I thought they were F-15's, but don't quote me on that!)

Miles 22-24 - 7:35, 7:19, 7:21  Mile 22 is where some body decided a hill was a good idea. I blame... JG.... Of course what goes up, must go down - good, but a little tough on the legs during 'the wall' miles.

Mile 25 & 26.2 - 7:00, 7:18 (.2 sameish) I thought I might be losing it an did NOT want to finish slower than a 3:15 if at all possible, but as we all know - somethings we can't control no matter how much desire we have. I had a little in the tank so I picked it up and was glad I did.  Finished at 3:14:38 Not as great as I would have liked, but still a 5 minute PR and I am more than happy with that (for now ha!). Already had my ice bath and going to pig out some more! Come join if ya want. I will want to check on all the TOU runners!

Legs starting to feel stronger and get the itch in them, but I need to take at least a week off. So in the mean time here are a few pics from our trip to universal Orlando - specifically HP World. Oh and one last pic of my poor toes at the end of the marathon.

The Castle was amazing as you can see, the details were very impressive.

Sirius was one of my favorites

Fun gag shop :)

This stuff was YUM-O. I made some before of my own, but they have me beat. After tasting it I know what to tweak now to make it the same.

You would not believe how much cash we spent there.

Buckbeat, this is actually right before you go up the hill on the coaster.

Inside the Boar's head... more butter beer!  And now for my toes haha...

I did it. I managed to take a whole week off running and rested my nagging pulls/injuries. Time to stretch out and build up again. Easy 2 miles... maybe it wasn't so easy. Funny how that is.
