My first 50K - Kinda decided two weeks ago I would try it. My experience was overall good. My time and place are a bit deceiving, but more on that later.

We dodged a bullet as it has been hot and humid all week. We had some storms that drastically cooled it off and ended up 10 degrees lower than forecast. Good news. The flip side was the rain flooded the trails in at least 6 spots. And I mean up to my shorts deep in spots. Add in how hilly this thing was and then the uphill became so muddy. I fell twice and hit pretty hard. Luckily not where rocks were.

Unexpected- I did not expect there to be hills I had to walk. Not in my nature. Also limestone so slick that even a few downhill spots had to be walked. Crazy trails. I also did not expect when I broke away from the middle back and wanted to catch the lead pack that I would miss markers and get lost. This cost me almost 3 miles exactly. If I take out that I end up under 6 hours and finish about 15th-19th. Still my 29th I will be satisfied with since its my first 50k and there were about 120 runners. I will see if I can share some pics soon.

Very cool! Congrats Dan on your first ultra. It seems like most of them have hills steep enough to make you walk. Too bad you got lost. That can be demoralizing. Good job staying positive and still finishing well.

Awesome race Dan. On 2 weeks notice? Incredible! I'm aiming for my 1st Ultra in September - a LOT more notice. Given the conditions, you did very well. Congratulations.

Fantastic work, Dan. Being able to determine that you need to walk spots of the race so you can finish, vs. The nagging "but I'm in a race!" That's in your head - that takes some wisdom. Great first 50k!

what a surprise race you never said anything about it. 50k wow Nice job finishing the race at 29th place after being lost for 3 miles if it was me I would have called it a day but not you great job Dan. Get some rest you earned it.

Rhett- You are CERTAINLY correct on how deflating it was going the wrong way. However it was not going to get the best of me.

Michael- Thanks- I am not sure it was the smartest move, but I wanted to do it anyway. I have a longer one possible in the fall so I thought I might as well see what it was like now.

Tom- You met me, no wisdom here, just self preservation lol

Yasir- Thanks - I think you would have toughed it out with me :)

50k! nice job -- it sounds really tough, esp the water puddles up to your shorts. hopefully you got some cool splash shots
