Today was the day my group I have been training was to run their first marathon. My official goal for them was... 'beat Oprah' ... and they did. I was the pacer and the pace I wanted them to hold was sub 10:00. Keep in mind they are young, and it was a bucket list for them. Yes they trained hard but nothing like many train on the blog so that was a big goal for them. Still waiting for the official results, but I have us at 9:57/mile and they were thrilled!

I really did enjoy pacing and soaking in the race while motivating them. I have a gift for talking too much and did plenty of jokes, stories and personal experiences. This was fun and helped them through the end. I figured I did something right as true to form I made their last mile the fastest. 7:59. That was big for them, nice to see excited faces. Lewis, the one guy, already wanted to run another one at a real pace. I said that takes dedicated training, but I'd love to pace again.

Overall good day.

Nice job. Was it flat and cool?

From Dan on Sat, Sep 21, 2013 at 15:58:39 from 24.209.83.20

62 and rain at the start. rain ended right away and nice weather. I prefer 48 but I'll take it :) Its not flat. Not epic hills, but it starts out going up and some idiot put a hill at mile 22.

Sounds like a pretty cool experience. You must have set a perfect pace! Hopefully a speedy recovery for you.

Congratulations Dan, pacing is a great way to give back to the sport, especially when you have trained those you pace! Gotta love the fast last mile ... makes them wonder what they are capable of! :)

This is so cool! Probably much more rewarding than your "personal" PR.

BTW...can you come and pace me to a perfect 3:16 marathon? :-)

From derhammer on Thu, Sep 26, 2013 at 09:46:34 from 64.245.52.2

Awesome way to give back. Congrats.

Joe- It was pretty cool and thanks, I am recovering quite well.

JG- Yes, read my mind, they are already talking about next time.

IJR- I would be honored to pace you to 3:16... however, not sure I am in the shape to do so!

DH- Thanks, bout time I did.
