AM- 4 easy, cooler (68) but still humid...

PM- 13, started slow, then after 7 ran progressively faster. Last mile 7:22. Overall better day of work, trying to manage the time properly so the stress does not affect the running. Read an article about another high school kid dying during football conditioning in the heat/humidity. They push and are afraid to tell the coaches they are spent. If I was a coach and was seeing this happen I would figure out a way to practice in cooler temps or indoor or something- because something like this should never happen.

Nice mile this week Dan, good run! Yes, it is tragic! A lot of the counties around Atlanta banned outdoor school practices between 12 & 6 today ... a wise move ... yet my son still had cross country at 4 pm ... go figure! If I was coach I would tell them be there no later than 7 & be done by 8:30! Oh well, he ran his first sub 6 mile today & was pretty excited!

That is just too sad.

Nice miles on a Thursday. Impressive.

JG- glad to see some coaches are changing it up. Hey tell your son CONGRATS! That is very sweet.

Dan nice miles today. The arches must be feeling better! The whole push till you drop is so common in football because those guys are fighting for a roster spot. That’s why I like coaching CC and Track, it’s not so subjective. Your race times tell it all. No politics – although occasionally I’ll have a parent try to tell me that their son or daughter should be on a relay team. I pull out my relay and open splits show it to the parent and they still think for some reason their child is faster. Makes me want to pull out the little hair I have left!

Great job on the PM run, it must've been hot. Just read about a heat-related death at a HS football practice here as well, but it was actually a coach. Scary stuff.

Wow! That is scary. You better be careful with all of your long and crazy runs Dan. Stay out of that heat! 17 miles....you are kicking out the miles lately!

Mr. Ping....my new favorite goose made me laugh and think of you. He is so adorable, made that whole movie for me! ha!

Interesting post and great run. My dad never let me play football and it is paying off now. I run without knee pain, at least so far. Definitely heat is something that needs acclimation, and those kids hitting the field after spending all summer indoors are asking for trouble.

From Dan on Fri, Aug 05, 2011 at 20:19:30 from 24.209.83.20

D- Thanks, and it is sad. Ham- I am sure that is a tough part of coaching! Joe- it is, makes me think about the heat we run in and to avoid those hot afternoons. Steam- I will :) Mr Ping rocks, and now I know the truth about you. You did indeed have the noodle dream. Flat- I played 18 years of baseball and only a little football. Too bad I did not run back then, but thankful I did not spend my summers indoors like many teens today!
